Description
Two craft techniques. One purse. Entirely made by hand
This batik leather purse is made by artisans in Shantiniketan using two distinct batik techniques applied to genuine leather – skin batik and crackle batik — working together on one surface in a way that gives this purse a depth and character no printed or machine-made bag can replicate.
In crackle batik, wax is applied to the leather surface and deliberately fractured before dyeing — creating that fine network of dark lines across the cream central panel that you can see and feel. The crackle is the technique. Each line is where the wax broke and the dye seeped through — a record of the making process that is different on every single piece.
Over and alongside this, skin batik layers hand-painted pigment colour directly onto the leather surface. Each stroke is applied individually by the artisan’s hand. The cream crackle panel catches light differently from the painted sections. The result is a surface that rewards looking at closely.
